Mainstream mysteries are published first in hardcover and only later in rack-sized paperback. The mainstream mystery has many of the same elements as the genre mystery—clues, suspects, suspense, menace, and so on. However, the characters in mainstream mysteries are gener­ ally more "textured"; hence, they demonstrate more facets of character than characters in genre novels. Like other mainstream novels, characters in mainstream mysteries are more like "real" people with "real" problems. Mainstream mystery novels will often have a subplot involving, say, an ex-wife or a problem child, that has nothing to do with the murder.
