Each Actuality, to continue to be in existence, must therefore adjust itself to Existence. If it succeeds, it keeps abreast of other Actualities in the same space, within a common time, through a common Page 25 process of causation. If it fails, it becomes a bare fact, a past item, no longer present, lacking Existence. The reality of a distinctive, possessed portion of Existence in each Actuality enables it to be at once continuous with and opposed to the Existence that remains outside. The continuity makes it possible for the Actuality to be a unit inside Existence, and to be subject to Existence's stresses and laws; the opposition makes it possible for the Actuality to impose itself on Existence, subject Existence to itself.
