He put dozens upon dozens of undated newspaper clippings in chronological order—a monumental task—and assembled them along with other materials.

On August 2, 1909, the Flyer became America’s first military plane, designated Signal Corps Aeroplane No. 1 (SC1) and identified in the Washington Evening Star as “Aeroplane No. ” Lt.
