Kant and the epistemological question As everyone knows, Kant refused to choose between empiricism and rationalism. He could accept neither the reliance upon representations that characterizes empiricism nor the rationalist’s assumption that scientific knowledge stems out of innate ideas. Since, contrary to Chomsky or Fodor, he distinguished innate from a priori, he was much more concerned with a slightly different idea but with a similar epistemological scope, that of the relationship between ‘thoughts and things’, to put it in James Mark Baldwin’s famous phrasing of the question.

His interpretation of the findings shows that although moral judgments are never based on ‘pure structure’, that is on norms alone, levels of moral reasoning do influence the interpretation of these facts.
