For a heresy accusation to occur and produce formal charges of some sort, two conditions needed to exist. The accused had to have said or done something which could reasonably be construed as heretical by some standard. Heresy accusations rarely occurred against those who were not in some way vulnerable to an accusation. The few exceptions to this rule are essentially political trials to which an accusation of heresy has been added. 28 A statement made disputative or recitative would be less likely to produce an attack than one made assertive, but which category a statement fell into could be open to debate in many cases.
